Social Media Agency to Offer 24/7 Service
I just read this article in Ad Age that talked about Brian Mandelbaum’s idea for a social media agency that stays open 24/7 to be able to constantly respond to what’s happening in the social sphere. For some reason, a lot of the commenters seemed totally against the idea citing work life balance and all that. “It’s madness, I tell you, madness!!” I hear them shriek from their cubicles around the city.
I think it’s a great idea. It’s something every agency should be doing already. Obviously more people are using social media during after work hours and weekends. Why shouldn’t someone be on call to answer people’s customer service tweets at 10pm when they are most likely to be grumbling to their families about how terribly slow that service is?
For those that say they can’t imagine how the work life balance would be, well, I’m sure you wouldn’t need the entire agency to be up at 3am. You would just need a few select people to be monitoring the social feeds in case some really important event does come up at that hour. It seems like a great way to get a flexible schedule in the workplace and do shift work rather than the typical 9-5.
Maybe it’s just because I’m young and used to the strange schedules that college life keeps me on, but I would be totally on board for something like this. The only drawback for me would be the dangers of traveling into a city at odd hours of the night when the crazies seem to be lurking more than usual.
What do you guys think? Is this idea genius or insanity?
