She talked a bit about corporate responsibility vs. social responsibility and I outlined a few of the points she made.

1. Find your voice.

2. Don’t forget that people are more important than technology.

3. Don’t judge. Everyone’s important so treat them that way.

4. Don’t say “I’m a people person” in your interview.
Barb says she can tell right away whether you are a people person or not so there’s no need to say it.

5. Use your gut.

6. Make everyone decision as if it were your money or as if it will make your career.

7. Go to work to be great person, not a great marketer.

8. Find what’s important to you and do it.

Litter Genie - JWT New YorkWell, this is pretty great.

Litter Genie - JWT New York

Well, this is pretty great.

I didn’t think there could be a more frighteningly honest...

I didn’t think there could be a more frighteningly honest tagline. You know it’s kerrazzyy because I went against my better nature and spelled it in a ridiculous manner with too many consonants. Everything this agency does feels like they are trolling the advertising world and I fully love it. The idea of the campaign is that kayak.com won’t let Frank Reardon it’s site so he makes his own. Check out the YouTube magic.

www.letfrankon.com
www.frankskayaks.com

Creative Potty Training

I can’t wait until my portfolio stops being such a little poop nugget and becomes a fully formed piece of shit so that I can point to it and people will come over to congratulate me for being such a big girl and doing it all by myself.

For some reason, a lot of the commenters seemed totally against the idea citing work life balance and all that. “It’s madness, I tell you, madness!!” I hear them shriek from their cubicles around the city.

I think it’s a great idea. It’s something every agency should be doing already. Obviously more people are using social media during after work hours and weekends. Why shouldn’t someone be on call to answer people’s customer service tweets at 10pm when they are most likely to be grumbling to their families about how terribly slow that service is?

For those that say they can’t imagine how the work life balance would be, well, I’m sure you wouldn’t need the entire agency to be up at 3am. You would just need a few select people to be monitoring the social feeds in case some really important event does come up at that hour. It seems like a great way to get a flexible schedule in the workplace and do shift work rather than the typical 9-5.

Maybe it’s just because I’m young and used to the strange schedules that college life keeps me on, but I would be totally on board for something like this. The only drawback for me would be the dangers of traveling into a city at odd hours of the night when the crazies seem to be lurking more than usual.

What do you guys think? Is this idea genius or insanity?

Also, I guess I'm blogging again.

I haven’t blogged here in a while. I got a bit bored with it, if I’m being honest. Once I reached a certain number of followers I was kinda like *shrug* “That’s cool, I guess,” and started looking for the next challenge, because really, it’s a Tumblr blog. Hardly something to brag about.

I started some other blogs, got a bit of that sunlight everyone has been yammering on about, and actually tried to enjoy my college experience for a while— what’s left of it, anyway. And more importantly, I took some time to work on my own portfolio, which I desperately needed and still do.

But I’ve re-gained a little bit of steam this summer with social networking, and brushed off some of those insecurities that were nagging like, “Omg what happens if someone actually reads this?” or worse still, “What happens if someone I want to work for reads this?” But you know, if that agency is the kind of place where everyone needs to be told how awesome they are all the time— I probably don’t want to work there anyway… Ha, look at me being cheeky like I actually have options and we’re not in a recession.

That being said, I think adland could use a bit of honesty from time to time. And really, I’m not too much of a critic as much of an amused spectator, so I’m throwing my hat in the blogging ring again to offer my opinion for whatever it’s worth. Expect a wee bit more consistency, not much more maturity, and as much personality as I can muster in future posts.

Also, I twat. Follow me so I can feel popular and make up for not winning Prom Court in High School. My brother won 3 times. Not that I care… obviously… totally over it. You know, the way that everyone else in advertising is “totally over” their past grudges, because we’re grown ups now, OK!

Shell Targetted in Ad Campaign Hoax

Phew, some PR people over at shell at are going to be working over time trying to contain the onslaught from this prank that’s drawing attention to arctic drilling. This source (aka my lazy Google search result) says “an international organization of corporate pranksters”, called the Yes Men, created this fake site that looks and feels like it could be an actual Shell campaign…

Except that no advertising person, or client for that matter, in their right mind would actually approve a social media campaign for an oil company that asks users to generate their own headlines.

A few days ago, I blogged about the tricky challenge of making ads as creative as possible without sacrificing relevance in the eyes of ordinary consumers (http://bit.ly/MVPnJL). The point I made then is that if your creative meanderings take you far away from the actual product you’re selling, you will need something in your ad that is plainly connected to the reality of your product or service. In my last post, that “something” was the icy highway where the consumer would need reliable control.

In this 2011 Volkswagen campaign for responsible driving, the “something” is the speed of the child’s fall, which is stated as if it were the speed of a car. With that plus the line “Drive carefully,” Volkswagen has found a wonderfully simple and economical way to say, “Even low-speed collisions can be catastrophic, so please drive with the care necessary to avoid them.” There’s no car in the ad, but we’re still left with an awareness of the huge responsibility involved in driving. And though the ad says nothing about Volkswagen’s cars, we still infer that safety is top of mind with VW’s engineers.

Wonderfully inspiring work, as is so often the case with VW.

Thanks, as always, to the fine folk at Ads of the World for the images and credit info.
